چکیده

The development of cheap robot platforms with on-board vision remains one of the key challenges that robot builders have yet to surmount. This paper presents the prototype development of a low cost (<US$1000), on-board vision based, robot platform that participated in the small-size league in RoboCup’2000. The robot platform, named the VIPER robot, represents an integration of state of the art embedded technology to produce a robot that has reasonable computational abilities without compromising its size, cost or versatility. In this paper, we describe the hardware architecture of the system, its motivation through to its implementation. In addition, we reflect upon their performance at the competition as a measure of the robustness and versatility of the robot platform. Based on these reflections, we describe what remaining developments are required to evolve the system into a truly capable and versatile research platform.

FU-Fighters Omni 2001 (Local Vision)

Currently, the Small Size League is the only RoboCup competition that permits the use of external sensing systems. Most teams use a color camera that is mounted above the field to determine the positions of the robots and the ball. Since this simplified setup is not compatible with the idea of autonomous robots, we decided to build a second F180 team for the World Championships 2001 in Seattle,...

Real Time Vision System for a Small Size League Team

The RoboCup Small Size League (SSL) is a challenging environment for computer vision applications. Ball and robots move at speeds up to 2 m/s and the need of tracking them precisely requires the implementation of a high performance vision system. We will present the vision system developed in the ITAM Small Size Team (Eagle Knights) explaining the main algorithms and technical decisions made in...

Multi Robot Systems: The EagleKnights/RoboBulls Small- Size League RoboCup Architecture

In this paper we present the system architecture of the Eagle Knights/RoboBulls Small Size League RoboCup Team. In this league two teams composed of five autonomous robots each compete against each other in a medium size field. This league is one of the fastest and most thrilling in RoboCup permitting teams to develop complex coordination strategies. We explain the three main components of the ...

SSL-Vision: The Shared Vision System for the RoboCup Small Size League

The current RoboCup Small Size League rules allow every team to set up their own global vision system as a primary sensor. This option, which is used by all participating teams, bears several organizational limitations and thus impairs the league’s progress. Additionally, most teams have converged on very similar solutions, and have produced only few significant research results to this global ...

Rac Robotic Soccer Small-size Team: Control Architecture and Global Vision

The main goal of the RAC project is to develop a robotic soccer team for participating in the RoboCup’s small-size league competitions. This paper is focused on two main issues: distributed control of a team of robotic soccer robots; and computer vision for tracking and localization. A distributed control architecture tailored for robotic soccer is presented, which aims at fostering cooperation...
